This is one of my favorite pictures; It has spoken a thousand words to me.
It is a house… more appropriately called a dwelling than a house… in the sugar cane bateyes of the Dominican Republic. It is one we visited when we were there in December. That table outside, that thing with the cooking pots, that is a kitchen. No, really…. it is. Amazing, isn’t it, how we, “the privileged” complain about our outdated cabinets, too small appliances, and that less than desirable color of paint chipping off of our walls? These people- the ones that own this kitchen- they don’t have walls in their kitchen. And actually, most don’t own their houses. They are owned by the sugar cane company that they work for.
Take a closer look… see the white table that those cooking pots are resting on? This picture was framed and hanging over my stove top for over 2 months before a friend with sharp eyes noticed and pointed out to me that it is not a table after all… it is the back side of a refrigerator.
These people, the ones that reside in this villages, they seem so happy. So eager to engage. So teachable… they just need people to help them learn. So, the Suons say ‘here we are– send us! We are willing to go!’ We want to help build school buildings and we want to help build lives and we cannot go without people caring enough to send us there… without people letting us be the hands and feet of Jesus working on their behalf in the DR.
The thing is that advancing the gospel and taking it to other parts of the world requires inviting more people to get involved. We can’t do it on our own, but TOGETHER we can.
There is no shortage of ministries to be involved in, and there is no guilt in this not being the one that you choose to support, but if you have been thinking and praying about it, we would be thrilled to have you on our team today. We are in need of monthly investors at any amount. For some people $10 monthly would be a sacrifice, and we know that for others, $200 isn’t out of the question. The important thing isn’t the amount you are able to give, it’s that you do it joyfully. You can do that by going to the Freedom International Ministries Investment Page and choosing “Suon Family”.
Yes, the fields in the Dominican Republic are white, and it’s not because of the sugar cane. The country which bears a Bible on it’s flag has been highly evangelized but there is a real need for discipleship and education and for them to learn life skills. In a place that seems forgotten somehow, a Christian school like Freedom seeks long-term relationships which has the potential to yield real change for them spiritually, emotionally, and physically.
There will be a class of 30 new preschoolers enrolling in June, and the building of new classrooms is happening now. We need to get there, and we would prayerfully consider that you help us to help others. This is a personal ministry where you will be able to stay in touch with us and see the faces you are impacting on a consistent basis. It’s not just a cliche- you truly can make a difference.
With Love, The Suon Six ♡
