Don’t store up treasures here on earth, where moths eat them and rust destroys them, and where thieves break in and steal. Store your treasures in heaven, where moths and rust cannot destroy, and thieves do not break in and steal. Wherever your treasure is, there the desires of your heart will also be. (Matthew 6:19-21)
There have been some really exciting things happening lately with our fundraising endeavors. We have started to meet with people! We are SO excited to be doing this! Sharing what our future plans are and inviting people to join us in the Lord’s work has has yielded unexpected blessings. Not only are we telling others about our ministry in the Dominican Republic, but we get to journey with them and are learning about their faith walks as well. Fundraising is fun? You bet it can be. 🙂 Our children are in heaven with the flurry of activity, and more people are joining our financial support team and partnering with us! We are so thankful for those of you who are supporting us in any way!
Do you remember Marleny from this post? I am thrilled to tell you the rest of the story. Recently we were able to send a few little gifts to Marleny through a team that went to serve with Freedom short term. Angela, one of the Freedom Missionaries, asked me if I wanted her to tell her anything. This is what I said:
“Please tell her that she is a special girl… that God loves her and has a very special purpose for her life. (insert gospel presentation here 🙂 ) I don’t know if she would even remember me, but tell her that I miss her and that I love her lots.”
I heard back from Angela about a month later, and this is what she had to say:
“I had an amazing talk with Marleny a few weeks ago! I pulled her out of class and had her sit down with me in the entryway. I asked her if she remembered the family that came to visit the school a few weeks before that. She looked at me kind of funny until I showed her your picture of the two of you. Then she got a big smile on her face and nodded. I reminded her of your name and told her that you’ve been thinking about her and praying for her – that she made a big impression on you and that you wanted her to know that you care for her. I gave her your gifts, and she just beamed!
I was able to use the gifts as a springboard… Talked about the greatest Gift… We talked about what she thought she had to do to be a Christian. She said, pray and go to church.
We talked through what being a follower of Jesus actually looked like! After we went through the amazing parts of Christ’s death, burial, and resurrection, I asked her if she had ever accepted those truths as her own, admitting her sin and need for a Savior (in more kid-friendly terms, of course). She said no. I asked her if she wanted to do become a follower of Jesus. She nodded yes! So we prayed! She had a big ol’ smile on her face when we were through… I talked to her for awhile longer… Told her that life as a Christian isn’t always easy. We talked about how she doesn’t have to be perfect. How God values relationship with us. It was so sweet!”
Marleny put her faith in Christ, and is surrounded every day with loving missionaries and teachers to protect her and shepherd her and help nurture her growing faith. And that, my friend, is why when you support our family going to the Dominican Republic, it is truly a Kingdom investment…. because God is able to work through human hands. Isn’t that the best?!
To our financial supporters– thank you!
Your generous gifts have changed Marleny’s life forever.
