Dear Freedom sponsor,
I don’t know who you are, where you live, or anything about you. What I do know is that you are providing a piece of your livelihood to sponsor a very special first grade girl named Marleny at Freedom Christian School.
Recently, my family and I went on a two-week mission trip to visit Freedom. When we arrived, we were overwhelmed with love from the school children. The students were fascinated with my little girls’ long blond hair. The boys at Freedom played soccer with my 9-year-old son, and my 2-year-old was an object of affection as well. Every night in our apartment, we would download the day’s pictures from my phone to our laptop. Slowly, I started noticing the same little girl showing up in my pictures. It was Marleny.
Every morning, we rode the Freedom bus to the school and picked up Dominican students along the way. Marleny would seek me out and sit with me. There was a language barrier, but I learned quickly that the language of love is universal – we didn’t necessarily need words. Marleny loved to have my arm wrapped around her as we rode to school. We would identify colors together – I would say them in English, and she would say them in Spanish. We’d also count together. I would ask her questions about our surroundings in my broken Spanish, and sometimes she would give me the funniest looks. I suppose I wasn’t always saying what I thought I was saying. ☺
I want to thank you for investing in this precious child. I left a piece of my heart in the Dominican Republic with her.
Marleny is just one of the many children currently being sponsored. Freedom students each have someone in the States who is investing in their education and spiritual health. These children are learning! They’re not only gaining opportunities to change the impoverished state they live in, both physical and spiritual, but they’re learning about God’s unending, never-failing love for them. And that means something. It means everything, actually.
I wonder if you know anything about Marleny. If not, let me tell you some things. First of all, she has the brightest brown eyes I have ever seen. They’re so beautiful and glassy that I could see my reflection when I looked at her. Also, Marleny is an eager learner. I spent some time with her in the classroom. She’s so very smart, and she tries hard. She has the sweetest and biggest smile. She gave it to me often, and let me tell you… it was a gift.
I miss Marleny. I wish I was there to be a part of her life, and our family is working on that. When we do return, I want to continue a relationship with Marleny and teach her how much Jesus loves her. I want to get to know her and be a part of changing her world.
Until then, our prayers are with her and the rest of the precious children of Freedom Christian School. They are going to be world changers, I am sure of it.
Thank you – for sponsoring my little friend Marleny and for giving to the Lord.
Love in Christ,
